Auschwitz was a Nazi concentration camp during world war 2. During its time as an active concentration camp an estimated 1,471,595 people were killed mainly Jews. It is impossible to give an accurate figure because in the year 1942 Himmler ordered all mass grave to be opened and corpses burned. Shortly after the camps liberation the soviet government stated 4 million people were killed, a figure now believed greatly exaggerated.
The first prisoners arrived in Auschwitz in the May of 1940 they consisted of 30 German prisoners.
By 1940-1941 17,000 poles and Jewish residents were expelled to the camp.
